Migration of John H. SMITH and Sarah R. HENDRICK

1. John H. SMITH, born 31 Mar 1796 in Richland County, South Carolina; died 13 Jul 1866 in St. George Parish, Effingham County, Georgia, son of Stephen SMITH (JR) and Mary Eve HAMITER. He married in 1824 in Fairfield County, South Carolina Sarah R. HENDRICK, born 1806 in South Carolina; died in St. George Parish, Effingham County, Georgia.

Notes for John H. SMITH: John H. Smith and wife Sarah Hendrix lived in the old Smith place on Cedar Creek for awhile after their marriage in Fairfield County in 1824 but later moved to Georgia. That he was a skilled carpenter is attested to by the fact that he made the coffin for his uncle Adam Frederick Hamiter in 1822. A Mrs. Smith, not further identified, served as midwife for the Adam Frederick Hamiter family and was paid $3.00 - preseumbly for delivery of a slave. In 1850 John was 54 years old and living in Richland County, South Carolina. He was living with his wife Sarah 44 years old and his children; Daniel 19 years old, Mary 16 years old, John 11 years old, and Sarah 6 years old. John's occupation was planter with a real estate value of $3000.00. In 1860 John was 64 years old and living in Beer Creek, Henry County, Georgia. He was living with his wife Sarah 54 years old and his daughter Sarah 15 years old. Also living in the house hold was his mother-in-law Susan Hendrick 84 years old. John was a farmer with a real estate value of $5500.00 and a personal property value of $13,900.00.

Children of John H. SMITH and Sarah R. HENDRICK were as follows:

a. George SMITH. George died at about 20 years old.

b. Jesse SMITH. Jesse married in Georgia and was killed in the Civil War.

c. Daniel A. SMITH, born 1831 in Richland County, South Carolina. He married Arinthia WOODSWORTH.

d. Mary A. SMITH, born 1834 in Richland County, South Carolina. She married (1) [---] DEAS; (2) [---] TODD; (3) [---] MAGGARD.

e. John Wesley SMITH, born 1839 in Richland County, South Carolina. John was killed in the Civil War.

f. Sarah Nancy SMITH, born 1844 in Richland County, South Carolina. She married [---] HATHCOCK.
