Migration of Charles GAVIN and Bathiah BYRD

1. Charles GAVIN, born abt 1750 in Duplin Co., North Carolina; died bef 1820 in Cattle Creek, Orangeburgh, South Carolina, son of Charles GAVIN and Mary SLOAN. He married in South Carolina Bathiah BYRD, born abt 1750 in Duplin County, North Carolina; died 1838 in Jasper County, Mississippi; buried in Hopewell Meth., Paulding, Mississippi, daughter of John BYRD and Catherine KING.

Notes for Charles GAVIN: Census 1790 gives five sons and four daughters, but only two sons and three dau. are known about. The others could have died young. Served in the Rev. War. Served in Revolutionary War, listed page 81, Vol. II Dar Patriot Index New Ancestor List. Charles Gavan. Roster of SC Patriots in the Revolution. Bobby Gilmer Moss. Served in the Militia under Captain Servis and General Sumter during 1781 and lost a horse and saddle at Fishing Creek during 1780. SC Auditied Accounts #2739. Moved from Mecklenburg Co, N.C. Near where Rocky Creek enters the Catawba River. Samuel probably moved with Charles. Hezekiah Ford and Charles married sisters. Miss Celia and Bathiah Byrd. Ford had two children by Celia, Bartlett, and Mary who married --Witherspoon. Bartlett Smith was half-brother to Bathiah. Charles Gavin made oath in 1785 in Camden District before Charles Pickett, J.P., that proves his 1780-1781 Revolutionary War service. "1780. 2 Horses and Saddles Lost in the Service on an expedition at Fishing Creek, Genl. Sumters Brigade. Appraised to Sterling L 30-0-0. 1781, 21 days footmans duty in an expedition at Congarees. Genl. Sumters Brigade L 1-10-0, Charles Lewis Capt. Camden Distct. Appeared Thomas Gaven and John Watts and made Oath that the Above Horses and Saddles was appraised by them to the Value of Thirty Pounds Sterling Sworn to before me this 10th June 1785. Charles Pickett JP, Thomas Gavin, John (his mark) Watts. Appeared Charles Gavin and made oath that the above mentioned horses and saddels was lost in the Sarvis and that he never recd. any part thereof and that the other acct. is just and True". Charles Gavin received a 382 acre land grant in 1789. For "Eight pounds Sterling money paid by Charles Gavin...382 acres surveyed for him the 1st. April 1789. Situate in the district of Orangeburgh on poke Swamp, Bay, Waters of North Edisto River, bounding South West on Montgomery, the other sides on Vacant Land. Witness...; Charles Pinckney Esquire, Governor.. this fourth day of May 1789...F. Bremar Surveyor-General. 13th. April 1789.

Notes for Bathiah BYRD: Dau of Mr. Byrd and Miss King. After Charles death Bathiah moved to Mississppi to live with her children who had migrated earlier. Orangeburg District, SC, 1820 census. Bathiah Gavan, 1 male 16-26, 0 females, 8 salves. Also, in 1820 in Greene Co. Miss. the Bethiah Gaffin had 2 males 10-16, 1 female over 45 and 2 slaves. Bathiah moved to Miss, and left a son or grandson or other relative to oversee her SC land. In 1820 Greene Co. Bethyra Garvin, 1 female 70-80, 12 slaves.

a. Catherine GAVIN, born abt 1773 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died abt 1813 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; buried in Cattle Creek, Orangeburgh, South Carolina. She married William< GRESSETT.

b. Charles GAVIN (JR), born 15 Jul 1775 in Spartanburg District, South Carolina; died 18 Mar 1824 in Cliftonville, Noxabee Co., Mississippi. He married on 13 Jan 1803 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina Margaret HORGER, born 19 Apr 1785 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 19 Jul 1853 in Noxubee, Mississippi, daughter of John HORGER and Rachel SHULER.

c. Mary GAVIN, born 5 Sep 1777 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died abt 1820 in Green Co., Mississippi. She married William Beverly CLAYTON.

d. John GAVIN, born 1 Jun 1780 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina; died 16 Apr 1838 in South Carolina; buried in Indian Fields, St. George, South Carolina. He married in 1810 Anne HUGHES, born 1785 in St. George Parish, Berkley Co., South Carolina; died 20 Jul 1839 in South Carolina; buried in Indian Fields, St. George, South Carolina, daughter of David HUGHES and Susannah ABERLY.

Notes for John GAVIN: David GAVIN (MAJ), born 15 Nov 1811 in South Carolina; died 17 Jan 1874 in St. George Parish, Berkley Co., South Carolina was the son of John Gavin and Anne Hughes. He lived in St. George's Station, was a lawyer and made many trips to the Court House in Orangeburg. His diary contains many comments about the people living in Orangeburgh and surrounding area. Names such as Rumph, Pendarvis, Inabinet, McHalhany, Sistrunk, etc. The Diary was not placed in the South Carolina Library because some people were still alive and they might have objected to some of David's remarks. There is a plot of land of 2,000 acres in Orangeburg that David had once owned, now owned by descendant that lives in Macon, GA. Major David GAVIN's Diary starts Sep 10, 1855 Oct 13, 1855 entered suit for Ch. Gavin Vs Jas. L. Navely to try title. Friday June 20, 1862. 22 yrs ago I was living on our Belton Place with all my brothers, Charles, John and William. I then had about 7 negros, 800 acres of land, one old mare, a few cattle and $2800. Now I have 33 negros, 4, 260 acres of land, $15, 000, cattle, hogs and horses 20 Aug 1861, David Gavin elected Captain of the Indian Field Beat, by 21 votes.

e. Ann GAVIN, born 1781 in Colleton District, South Carolina; died aft 1850 in Perry County, Mississippi. She married bef 1812 Thomas C. BOLTON, died 26 Nov 1821 in Perry County, Mississippi. Records of Perry County MS, Vol. 1, 1820-1830 Tax Polls. 1821 Shows an Ann (Gavin) Boulton, holding 420 acres and 18 slaves. 1822 Shows an Ann Boulton, holding 420 acres and 20 slaves. 1823 Shows an Ann boulton with 490 acres. 1825 Shows a Ann Boulton with 420 acres and 22 slaves. 1827 Shows an Ann Boulton with 500 acres and 20 slaves. 1828 Shows an Ann Boulton with 499 acres and 18 slaves. 1829 Shows an Ann Boulton with 500 acres and 20 slaves.

f. Charlotte GAVIN, born 1785. She married Alexander MCKENZIE.

h. Berthiah E. GAVIN, born 17 Jan 1799 in South Carolina; died 7 Aug 1887 in Mississippi. She married John D. RATCLIFF, born 25 Sep 1796 in South Carolina; died 12 Oct 1863 in Jasper County, Mississippi.
