Migration of Joseph BROWN and Mary STEVENSON

1. Joseph BROWN, born 22 Jul 1770 in South Carolina He married abt 1790 in South Carolina Mary STEVENSON, born 28 Dec 1771 in South Carolina.

Notes for Joseph BROWN: 1800 census of SC revealed that there were three men by the name of Joseph Brown living in South Carolina. The composition of the family fits only one of these men; Joseph Brown of Chesterfield County, SC. Living adjacent to Joseph Brown of Chesterfield County SC were Thomas Brown and John H. Brown. On June 1, 1805 Joseph Brown and Mary (Stevenson) Brown were dismissed from Dean Swamp Church to join Willow Swamp Baptist Church in Orangeburg County, SC. While a member of Willow Swamp Baptist Church, Joseph Brown was named several times as Moderator and delegate to the association. About 1818 at least four of the children of Joseph Brown migrated from SC to Jefferson County, Alabama. Jefferson Co., AL was formed in 1819 and they were some of the first settlers. There they belonged to the Mud Creek Church and were among those that organized the church.

Children of Joseph BROWN and Mary STEVENSON were as follows:

a. Winnifred BROWN, born 15 Jan 1793 in South Carolina; died aft 1855. She married Thomas C. YOUNG (Jr), born 7 Sep 1789 in Norway, Orangeburg County, South Carolina; died 1855 in Neshoba Co., Mississippi, son of Thomas YOUNG (Sr) and Hannah PATRICK.

Notes for Winnifred BROWN : Joseph Brown family bible, copyrighted 1809 also lists: Levica Strain was born April 8, 1809; Mary Louisa Young was born November 3, 1810; Henry Simeon Young was born November 30, 1812; Cephas Young was born August 23, 1815; Mary Ann Young was born January 21, 1819; Jospeh B. Butler was born October 10, 1822; and Martha Ann Brown was born August 22, 1823. 1836 migrated to MS with Holman's.

b. James BROWN, born 26 Feb 1795 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died abt 1867 in Winston County, Mississippi. He married unknown.

c. Thomas BROWN, born 2 Apr 1798 in South Carolina.

d. Mary Mariah BROWN, born 24 Mar 1801 in South Carolina.

e. Joseph Martin BROWN (Rev), born 20 Oct 1803 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 18 Sep 1859 in Eberneza, Attala Co., Mississippi. He married on 5 Nov 1822 in Jefferson County, Alabama Jane WALDROP, born 11 Oct 1803; died 26 Aug 1868 in Zama, Attala Co., Mississippi, daughter of Robert WALDROP and Nancy MCCLERKIN.

Notes for Joseph Martin BROWN (Rev): One of 16 organizing member of Mud Creek Baptist Church on April 16, 1837. Ordained into the ministry of Winston County, MS on Sept. 15, 1840.

g. John Calvin BROWN, born 2 Apr 1809 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 6 May 1892 in Winston County, Mississippi; buried in Mt. Carmael Cem., Winston County, Mississippi. He married on 4 Oct 1838 in Jefferson County, Alabama Nancy Wood CULBERTSON, born 5 May 1818; died 23 Apr 1893 in Winston County, Mississippi, daughter of William Davies Thomas CULBERTSON and Narcissa R. WOOD.
