Migration of Gabriel PURSWELL and Elizabeth STIVENDER

1. Gabriel PURSWELL, born 18 Jun 1809 in Barnwell Co., South Carolina; died 8 Apr 1898 in Dale County, Alabama, son of Henry PURSWELL and Rachel BRIGHT. He married (1) abt 1829 in South Carolina Elizabeth STIVENDER, born 1812 in South Carolina, daughter of Frederick STIVENDER and Mary DYCHES; (2) on 14 Jan 1864 in Barbour County, Alabama Mary Louisa BATEMAN.

Also reference Court Record N, page 59. Pension for Indian Wars. Letter written in 1931 by Mr. John F. Purswell, age 77 - "My great grandfather was a scotch sailor and his name was Henry Purs, and when he stopped sailing he stoped (sic) in America and he married a woman by the name of Well and they put there (sic) names together that gives our name Purswell. They had one son and he married and had one son. He married a styvander..."

Notes for Elizabeth STIVENDER: Elizabeth was an heir of William Condrey of Henry County, AL (Henry Co., AL court record G, page 478).

Children of Gabriel PURSWELL and Elizabeth STIVENDER were as follows:

a. William Sanford PURSWELL, born 24 Mar 1830; died 12 Apr 1912 in Montgomery County, Texas; buried in County Line Cem., San Jacinto Co., Texas. He married (1) on 8 Jan 1851 in Barbour County, Alabama Elizabeth CONDREY, daughter of William CONDREY and Elizabeth CREEL; (2) on 22 Oct 1906 in Montgomery County, Texas Elizabeth Saucier SIMPSON. William Sanford PURSWELL Tombstone reads: C6. G. 29th ALA Rgt - C.S.A. Veteran Enlisted Aug. 10, 1862 at Clayton in Company "G" SEAL's GUARDS 29th Alabama Infantry Regiment, age 31, on detached service July 1 - Oct. 31, 1862, on leave March and April, 1863. He was wounded at Resaca, Georgia May 14, 1864. c1854 in Barbour Co. AL when son, John was born, 12 mi. so. of New Fallow. 1855 - 15 Dec. land certified, Barbour Co. TWSP9, Range 27 (Ch. 2, Register of Certificates, Sparta Land Office 1836 - 1852 Book 505). 1860 census included Condry, Penelope 12 AL in household. Near Gabriel Purswell 762/781, H.D. Purswell 764,783. Also near David and Sarah W. Zorn ages 42/38 both b. SC 766/785. c1867 - Moved to lower part of Dale Co. Al Resided in Texas after 1875 1880 - Lived 11 miles east of Conroe in Montgomery County.

b. Francis Jane PURSWELL, born 24 Apr 1832; died 21 Jul 1917; buried in County Line Cem., San Jacinto Co., Texas. She married on 6 Jan 1853 in Barbour County, Alabama William Lewis WISE.

c. John F. PURSWELL, born abt 1834 in Barbour County, Alabama; died Jan 1839 in Barbour County, Alabama.

d. Henry Duncan PURSWELL, born 1836. He married on 31 Jul 1856 in Barbour County, Alabama Amanda VINCENT. H.D. Purswell member of Company G, 29th Alabama Infantry Regiment, CSA - Seal's Guards, Barbour County.

e. Rachel Malissa PURSWELL. She married (1) on 21 Dec 1856 in Barbour County, Alabama Stephen W. ETHERIDGE; (2) Clayton REYNOLDS.

f. Mary Elizabeth PURSWELL, born 1852. She married John PATTERSON.
