Orangeburgh District Migrations

Migration of Jacob SNIDER and Susannah OSWALT

1. Jacob SNIDER, in Craven County on the east side of the Congaree sometime before 1763 and died about 1813 in Juniper, Lexington District, South Carolina, son of Johann Michael SNIDER and Anna Rosina SCHLÄGEL. He married about 1780 in Lexington District, South Carolina Susannah OSWALT, born before 1765 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died about 1835 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, daughter of Mathias OSWALT (SR) and Susannah DICKERT.

Notes for Susannah OSWALT: Migrated to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama with her children about 1819. Killed about 1835 when her pony fell on an icy bridge in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

Children of Jacob SNIDER and Susannah OSWALT were as follows:

a. William G. SNIDER, born 1782 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died aft 1860 in Panola County, Texas; buried in Old Macedonia, Panola County, Texas. He married bef 1802 in South Carolina Mary SANFORD, born 1782 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died bef 1860 in Panola County, Texas, daughter of Thomas SANFORD and Lavinia TURBEVILLE.

Notes for William G. SNIDER: The SNIDERS, along with the WEAVERS, SEAS, OSWALTS, KYSERS, SANFORDS and PRICES, migrated from South Carolina to Tuscaloosa County, Alabama by wagon train about 1818. Reportedly, they settled in the valley of the Black Warrior River. 1830 Tuscaloosa County, Alabama Census; "First Settlers of Shelby and Harrison County, TX", pg. 39; 1850-1860 Shelby County, TX Census. All of William Sniders' children went on to Texas (except Jacob). b. John SNIDER, born BET 1784 AND 1790 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died aft 1850 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He married bef 1808 in South Carolina Mary HOPKINS, born 1785 in South Carolina.

c. George SNIDER, born 1785 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died aft 10 Feb 1838 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. He married bef 1804 in South Carolina Barbara [---], born in South Carolina.

d. Catherine SNIDER, born abt 1785 in South Carolina; died in Fayette County, Alabama. She married bef 1799 in South Carolina Absalom Abraham SANFORD (SR), born 1780 in Pee Dee, South Carolina; died 22 Nov 1850 in Alabama, son of Thomas SANFORD and Lavinia TURBEVILLE.

e. Barbara Rebecca SNIDER, born 1788 in Lexington County, South Carolina; died 2 Mar 1867 in Center, Shelby County, Texas; buried in Forbis Cemetery, Shelby County, Texas. She married on 8 Sep 1803 in Lexington District, South Carolina William Jasper SANFORD, born 7 Feb 1779 in Pee Dee, South Carolina; died 9 Jun 1867 in Center, Shelby County, Texas; buried in Forbis Cemetery, Shelby County, Texas, son of Thomas SANFORD and Lavinia TURBEVILLE.

f. Sophia SNIDER, born BET 1790 AND 1800 in Lexington District, South Carolina. She married (1) aft 16 Aug 1814 in Lexington District, South Carolina Emanuel KYZER; (2) abt 1837 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama Henry WEAVER, born 30 Nov 1801 in Lexington County, South Carolina, son of John Samuel WEBER

g. Margaret SNIDER, born 1794 in Lexington, South Carolina; died aft 1870 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. She married (1) in 1811/12 in Lexington District, South Carolina Nicholas SEAY, died abt 1828 in Mississippi; (2) in 1828 in Tuscaloosa County Alabama Henry WEAVER, born 30 Nov 1801 in Lexington County, South Carolina, son of John Samuel WEAVER.

Notes for Nicholas SEAY: Margaret divorced Nicholas Seay 14 Dec 1827 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama for desertion and adultery. He died about 1828 in New Orleans or Mississippi. Nicholas Sea had children before 1777.

h. Susannah SNIDER, died in Arkansas. She married John CARNLEY, son of Lewis CARNLEY.

Notes for Susannah SNIDER: Susannah lived in Monroe and Pike County, Alabama before moving to Arkansas in 1846 where she and her husband died. i. Mathias SNIDER, born 2 Jul 1795 in Lexington District, South Carolina; died 11 Oct 1866 in Pike County, Alabama; buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Pike County, Alabama. He married (1) on 11 Dec 1862 in Pike County, Alabama Sarah FULMER; (2) on 6 Jan 1813 in Lexington District, South Carolina Christina PRICE, born 25 Dec 1792 in Orangeburg District, South Carolina; died 28 Sep 1862 in Pike County, Alabama; buried in Old Salem Cemetery, Pike County, Alabama, daughter of George PRICE (Capt.).

Notes for Mathias SNIDER: Mathias Snider served 12 months in the War of 1812 and was stationed near Charleston, South Carolina at Fort Moultrie.
