Migration of Hans Hanil WALTERS and Anna Catherine DUSSEIGN

1. Hans Hanil WALTERS, born abt 1730 in Switzerland; died bef 1794 in Burke County, Georgia, son of Hans WALTER and Mary [---]. He married abt 1767 in St. George Parish, Effingham County, Georgia Anna Catherine DUSSEIGN, born abt 1750 in St. George Parish, Effingham County, Georgia; died aft 1806 in Screven County, Georgia, daughter of Jacob DUSSEIGN.

Notes for Hans Hanil WALTERS: Hans Walter Junr. went to Georgia 1761 and only one of his children was baptized in the Ebenezer Church of the Salzburgers. Name was Anglicized to Walters about 30 years after Hans went to Georgia and after his death. Hans Walter of Four Holes Swamp, planter, sold 300 acres to Henry Felder on 14 Dec 1761. REF: Chasn ZZ215. Drafted into the Berkley County Detachment under the command of Captain Benjamin Elliot, Lt. William Sanders, and Ensign Elias Vanderhorst for the Expedition to Fort Prince George on 8 November 1759. Discharged on 8 January 1760 at the Congaree River after serving 62 days. Hans Walter Junr. petitioned for land in Georgia in 1762 and settled in Halifax which became St. George's Parish and in 1777 Burke County, GA. In 1793, when Screven County was formed this land was taken into the new county. Name appears as John Hanil Waters in GA. Oct. 1764 John Hanil Waters petition to Colonial Government of Georgia stating that he had been two years in the Province. Petitioned again in Oct. 1767. Granted in Hallifax District in 1768. Signed promissory note endorsing the indebtedness of his brother, Hance Blaze Walter, on 4 July 1761. It will be seen that as late as 1787 John Waters was still called Hance/Hans when a survey was made for additional land. In the grant itself, he was John Hanil Waters. This is very significant in establishing his identity as Hans Walter, Jr., from South Carolina. Surveyed 25 Nov 1786, granted 8 August 1787.
