First Families of Orangeburgh District, South Carolina
Horger (Horguer, Hurger, Horgar)
The Heinrich Horger Family
FIRST GENERATION
1.HEINRICH (HENRY) HORGER, SR. was baptized on 15 January 1673 in Meiringen, Canton of Bern Switzerland and died 14 Feb 1760 in Orangeburgh Township, South Carolina.1 HEINRICH is the son of JACOB HORGER and CATHERAN DENNLER.2 (See Research Note C.) He is believed to have married three times: (1) BARBARA VON BERGEN on 14 March 1705 in Meiringen; (2) BARBARA DENTZ on 26 May 1712, and (3) MAGDALENA OTT on 15 May 1714 in Guttannen, Bern, Switzerland.3 (See Research Note D.)
The Horger family were citizens of Guttannen, a small village located in the Oberhasli region of Bern, Switzerland. In 1735 Heinrich, his wife, and at least 4 of his 5 known children traveled from Switzerland to Rotterdam, then secured passage to Carolina. The family is thought to have been a member of the Strigger immigration party arriving in Charlestown on the ship Samuel 13 July 1735 and to have been among the 220 "Switzers" who departed Charlestown about 24 July 1735, traveling up the Edisto (Pon Pon) River, to settle a township in Orangeburgh.4 It bears noting that he was 62 years of age when he began his new life in America.
On September 17, 1736, Heinrich received a grant for 350 acres of land in Berkeley County and lot #30 within the Orangeburgh Township.5 The land granted to Heinrich was located on the northeast side of the PonPon (Edisto) river near Bull Swamp, east-northeast of present day Orangeburg.6
Heinrich Horger died at the advanced age of 86 years and is buried in the old Pioneer Graveyard, Orangeburg, South Carolina.7
Children of HEINRICH HORGER and BARBERA VON BERGEN are not known with certainty. They were married for at least 7 years and likely to have had children during that time. (See Research Notes D & E.)
Children of HEINRICH HORGER and BARBERA DENTZ are unknown.
Children of HEINRICH HORGER and MAGDALENA OTT are:
2.i.HENRY HORGER, JR. was baptized 5 May 1720 in Guttannen, Switzerland.8 He married ANNA CATHARINA surname unknown before 1756 (see Research Note g). The marriage was not recorded by Rev. Giessendanner in the Orangeburgh Church Book of Record, but inferred based on baptism entries of his oldest daughter.9 At least four known children were born to them.
3.ii.CATHARINA HORGER was baptized 16 May 1723 in Guttannen, Switzerland and died in the Orangeburgh District, South Carolina.10 She married HENRY STRAUMAN on 01 Apr 1740 in the Orangeburgh Church.11 He was from Waldenburg, Basel, Switzerland and died in the Orangeburgh District, South Carolina.12 They had five known children.
4.iii.JACOB HORGER was baptized 19 May 1726 in Guttannen, Switzerland and died in 1794 in the Orangeburgh District, South Carolina.13 He married twice: (1) MARIA LOVISIA SHAUMLÖFFEL about 1748.14 She was baptized on 30 August 1730 in Lambsborn, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany and died in the Orangeburgh District, South Carolina.15 She was the daughter of JOHANNES (JOHN) HENRY SCHAUMLÖFFEL and MARIA MAGDALENA unknown. He married (2) CATHARINA unknown.16
The marriage between Jacob and Lovisia is recorded by Rev. Giessendanner, but the specific date entry was not made into his Book of Record or those pages of the Book were lost. However, sometime after 1749, Rev. Giessendanner prepared a list summarizing all marriages that he had performed in Orangeburgh, and the Jacob Horger - Lovisia Shaumloffel union was among those cited. They had eight known children, two boys and six girls.17
In 1749, Jacob joined in successfully petitioning the Governor and Council to send Rev. John Giessendanner to become ordained in the Church of England.18 Jacob was a prosperous farmer and large landowner in Orangeburgh District, acquiring at least 1,920 acres of land between 1753 and 1786.19
As with many of the men within the Orangeburgh District, Jacob Horger appears on the pay rolls of Col. John Fisher's Loyalist Militia in Captain Henry Giessendanner's Company alongside his sons Jacob Jr., John, and his sons-in-law as required by the Royal Provincial government during this time.20 It's unclear if that Loyalist unit actually had any engagements during their service period. However, Jacob Horger is a recognized Patriot for supplying "provisions and fodder" to the Continental State Troops and Militia during the American Revolution.21 (See Research Note H.)
Jacob is enumerated in the 1790 Federal Census within the North Part of the district. There are 2 Males over 16 years of age and 3 Females in his household.22 Jacob died in January/February 1794 at 67 years of age based on the probate date of his Will. He left a wife named Catherina who may have been previously married with children she brought into the marriage based on the language in his Will. It's unclear if the household members in his 1790 Census entry were her and her children.
5.iv.MAGDALENE HORGER was baptized on 23 April 1730 in Guttannen, Switzerland and died about 1805 in the Orangeburgh District, SC.23 She married PETER MURER, JR. on 02 Apr 1751 by Rev. Giessendanner in the Orangeburgh Church.24 He was baptized 4 Nov 1714 in Zeisimmen, Bern, Switzerland and died about 1790.25 They had at least five and possibly six children together.26

RESEARCH NOTES:
A. Digital images of the Meiringen Evangelical Reformed Church Baptism, Marriage, and some Death church registers are presented as PDF files online at the Bern State Archives website at http://www.be.ch/kirchenbuecher. They are also available at a local affiliate LDS Family History Library although their title and organization is a bit different than what's cited by the Bern State Archives.27
B. The Guttannen Church records are not yet available online from the Bern State Archives, but have been digitized on a DVD entitled "Guttannen Kirchenbücher, 1713-1875" located at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and also for purchase from the Genealogical Heraldic Society of Bern (GHGB) in Switzerland.28
C. Early Meiringen Churchbooks record the Horger family dating to the 16th century within the Oberhasli region of Switzerland consistent with Faust and Brumbaugh's account.[6] There are several Horger family groups residing in the area, mostly in the village of Guttannen. Many of the given names are the same across these families and through generations. Caspar, Hans, Heinrich, Anna, Barbara, Madlana, Catharina, and Elsbeth are the most common given names that repeat across most of the surnames in this region including the Horger family.29 Identifying which child's baptism corresponds to their marriage some 25-30 years later to form a family group is a challenge and somewhat uncertain. There are several Hans Horgers, Heinrich Horgers, and Caspar Horgers extending multiple generations that make identifying which one connected to Heinrich Horger the Orangeburg Immigrant somewhat uncertain. Examining the given names of the children within each Horger family group offers some additional clues as to how they are likely connected. The earliest and only Jacob Horger found during this period was baptized in 1648 as the youngest son of Caspar Horger and Küngeli Egger.30 The names of the children within the Caspar Horger/Küngeli Egger and Jacob Horger/Catheran Dennler family groups are consistent with the known children of Heinrich Horger, Sr., i.e. Heinrich, Jacob, Madalena, Catharina; whereas the given names of Hans, Elizabeth, Gilgi, and Caspar appear in the children of the Hans Horger/Anna Nägeli family.31 Furthermore, Heinrich Horger's recorded age at death by Rev. Gissendanner support the baptism date of Heinrich, son of Jacob Horger and Catheran Dennler, within 2-3 years.32
D. The Meiringen Church baptism register covering the years between 1704-1734 is lost and the church in Guttannen did not start recording baptisms until 1713. Thus, the children born to Heinrich Horger and both Barbara von Bergen and Barbara Dentz remain uncertain due to these missing records during the period they were married. According to Faust and Brumbaugh, Heinrich Horger had a daughter named BARBARA who remained in Switzerland and went into service as a maid when he and his family immigrated to Carolina. She would later leave Switzerland in 1742 with her illegitimate child, traveling with Peter Huber.33 No daughter named Barbara was born to Magdalena Ott so she is the likely daughter of either Barbara von Bergen or Barbara Dentz, born between 1705-1713.34
E. Many researchers record Peter Horger as one of Heinrich Horger's sons, but this has not been proven. The likely source was a translation error published by Salley mistaking Peter Horger for Peter Hug.35 No record of a Peter Horger has surfaced in the Orangeburgh District or elsewhere. However, I will note that Heinrich Horger's bounty land grant was for 350 acres supporting a household of seven.36 We now know six of the seven members in his family and it's unclear who would have accounted for the seventh. His daughter, Barbara, was not yet in Carolina. It is unknown why she remained in Switzerland and unclear if she had any plans to immigrate at the time her father left. Another seven years would pass before she arrived in Orangeburgh so it's not likely she was counted when the grant was issued.37 I'll also mention, according to the Meiringen Church registers, the name Peter shows up frequently in the von Bergen and Dentz families fostering a theory that he may have existed and could be a son to either one of Heinrich's first or second wives.38
F. The question regarding Magdalena Ott's birth and patrilineage is a bit more uncertain. The Ott family is a large family that appears in both Meiringen and Guttannen church records with a large number of the same given names repeated in almost every family group throughout several generations. The Meiringen Church records Caspar, Balthasar, and Wolfgang Ott each having a daughter baptized as "Madla" all born within a few years of each other who would have been an appropriate age to be the candidate wife of Heinrich Horger.39 Additionally, we find both Heinrich Horger and one of the two Melchior Otts arriving in Orangeburgh at the same time based on land survey dates with adjacent Orangeburgh Township lots (#30 and #29 respectively).40 Is there a possible relationship between these two families (i.e. brother-sister or cousins)? It's important to also note the Ott patriarchs, Caspar, Balthasar, and Wolfgang each had sons baptized as Melchior as well.41 Further work is needed to understand the relationship between Magdalena and Melchior Ott.
G. John Valentine Utsey and Maria Elisabetha Goetz, a first immigrant family from Germany, had a daughter named Anna Catharina Utsey. She was the only known woman named Anna Catharina documented in the Orangeburgh District during this time and therefore is a likely candidate for Henry Horger, Jr.'s wife. As further evidence of this relationship, Valentine Utsey appears as a baptism witness to Henry and Catherina Horger's daughter, Catherina.42
H. There appears to be a fair amount of confusion between Jacob Horger Sr.'s and his son, Jacob Jr.'s, militia service records in many SAR and DAR Membership Applications. Jacob and John Horger both appear on Captain Jacob Rumph's Company of Militia paylists and have received payment for time served in the militia; however, it is unclear if Jacob Horger was his son, Jacob Jr. or the father, Jacob Sr.43 It is believed these records relate to Jacob Jr.'s service and not that of his father.44
I. A note about the style I've used in the Swiss Church translations.45 All source citations are translated into English by me from the German and Latin script of the original record as written for context. Names and places are written with the original spelling used in the record to preserve how that changed over time. Question marks [??] indicate the record was unreadable in places or I couldn't interpret the letters in the handwriting of a particular word. Brackets [ ] are intended to show what was intended or inferred to be in the record based on context though not explicitly written, nd also to denote my comments, interpretations, and qestions for follow-up.
