Pedigrees and Lineages

If you want to get maximum benefit from this project you’ll need to submit your Pedigree or Lineage. This is the only way to relate your DNA results to Genealogy. The information you need to submit depends on the tests you have taken. If you’ve taken the Family Finder test or transferred autosomal results we need your full Pedigree. Access to pedigrees is restricted to project members who have submitted their pedigrees. Please contact Margaret Waters about adding your lineage data and getting a password for access to the pedigrees.

If you’ve taken a yDNA test we need your Paternal Lineage and if you’ve taken an mtDNA test we need your Maternal Lineage. Your Paternal and Maternal Lineages are sub-sets of your full Pedigree.

Pedigrees

We use the Ahnentafel numbering scheme for our Pedigrees and Lineages. This is a simple numbering scheme where the father’s number is twice the child’s number and the mother’s number is twice the child’s number plus one. You (the test taker) are always number 1. Your father is number 2 and your mother is number 3. Your paternal grandfather is number 4 and your maternal grandfather is number 6. Your grandmothers are numbers 5 (paternal) and 7 (maternal). See the chart at right for more detail. For the Family Finder test or transferred autosomal results we need your pedigree filled out as best you can through Generation 5. We do not need information on Generation 2 (your parents). If you have information on Generations 6 and 7 we’d like to have it.

Lineages

For the yDNA test we just need your Paternal Lineage (Blue highlight, numbers: 4, 8, 16, 32, etc.) as far back as you know. Include their spouses (Light Blue highlight) if known.

For the mtDNA dna test we just need your Maternal Lineage (Pink highlight, numbers: 7, 15, 31, 63, etc.) as far as you know. Include their spouses (Light Pink highlight) if known.

How to Submit

The following table shows the information we’d like to have for each individual in your Pedigree or Lineage. We are looking for just enough information to identify the individuals. We are not looking for a lot of detail.

The easiest way to provide the data to us is by an Excel spreadsheet. The downloadable Excel Spreadsheet Template can simplify the task. This spreadsheet can be filled out using either Excel or OpenOffice. If you are willing to fill out this spreadsheet, these Guidelines will help ensure some consistency among the charts. Please email the completed spreadsheet to Margaret Waters.

We can also accept text documents if you don’t have access to one of the spreadsheet programs. Please contact Margaret Waters to discuss the easiest way for you to submit your information.

There is no need to make multiple data submissions if you have taken more than one test. One Pedigree submission will suffice for all.
