Orangeburgh Family Migrations

As farming lands in the older low-country and midlands regions of South Carolina became heavily farmed and more scarce, families looked westward for new opportunities. Many Orangeburgh area families migrated into Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, and Texas during the early and mid nineteenth century as new land opened up and became available. Relocation typically happened in tandem with extended family groups preserving local customs and Swiss-German ties within the new settlements.
