Orangeburgh Migrations – Canada

During the Revolutionary War, the Orangeburgh District saw deep political divisions. Many residents and local militias remained loyal to the British Crown. When Patriot forces (such as those led by General Thomas Sumter) applied pressure and British garrisons collapsed, regional Loyalists retreated through Orangeburg toward Charleston. Upon the British evacuation of Charleston in 1782–1783, thousands of displaced South Carolina Loyalists—along with accompanying families and dependent individuals—boarded British fleet evacuations. Many sailed north to settle in Nova Scotia, including areas that later became New Brunswick.
