Migration of Bartholomew GARTMAN and Margaret Catherine

1. Bartholomew1 GARTMAN, born 26 Jul 1733 in Safien-Neukirch, Canton Graubunden, Switzerland; died 6 Jul 1801 in Jefferson Co., Georgia, son of Bartholomew GARTMAN and Barbara (GARTMAN) Gartman . He married abt 1775 in South Carolina Margaret Catherine [unknown], born abt 1758 in South Carolina; died 1805 in Jefferson Co., Georgia.

Notes for Bartholomew GARTMAN: Captain in the SC Militia in the Revolutionary War. Lived in the area of Lexington Co. (Dutch Fork or Saxe Gotha) and died in GA in 1801. Bartholomew Gartman listed 1 rifle gun and shot bag; 1 bayonet and one Dragon sword. Farmer. Had 6 males, 3 females, and 1 slave in 1790. On 20 Oct 1795 he was the administrator for the estate of John Gartman Sr. Moved to Jefferson County, Georgia in 1797 and purchased 500 acres of land from Michael and Sarah Shellman. Revolutionary War Claim #3285 provided 15 head t of cattle for militia use in 1778; provisions on 12 Jul 1786; served as a Horseman from 1 Mar 1780 to 20 May 1780 and 5 Aug 1780 to 1 Oct 1781; also 3 Oct 1781 to Aug 1782. On 7 May 1798 Bartholomew Gartman and George Kizer, received in trust a grant of 41 acres for the German Protestant Church, St. Bartholomew's Parish, Charleston District, on Savannah Creek, bounded by George Kizer's land; John Kizer's land and Jacob Rumph's land.

Notes for Margaret Catherine [unknown]: In 1825 the widow Catherine Girtman was living in Dobbs District, Jefferson County, GA and drew land lot #22 in twelfth district of Henry County , GA. Again on May 4, 1827 as a widow of a Rev. War soldier she drew lot 230 in the fifth district of Carroll County, GA but did not claim this land until 1838. By 1838 she was living in Marshalls District of Jefferson County, Georgia.

Children of Bartholomew GARTMAN and Margaret Catherine [unknown] were as follows:

a. Daniel GARTMAN, born 1780 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 1820 in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis Co., Georgia. He married on 9 Nov 1812 in Montgomery County, Georgia Sarah ARNOLD, born abt 1780; died 1870 in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis Co., Georgia. In 1801 Daniel served as the administrator of estate of Bartholomew Gartman. In 1817 Daniel received land grant of 150 acres.

b. John GARTMAN, born abt 1782 in South Carolina; died abt 1825 in Colleton Co., South Carolina.

c. William GARTMAN, born 1785 in South Carolina; died 1825 in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis Co., Georgia. He married on 10 Jun 1823 in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis Co., Georgia Smithey PEEPLES, born abt 1798; died abt 1860 in Hazlehurst, Jeff Davis Co., Georgia. Lived in Houston Co. GA for a while.

d. David GARTMAN, born 11 Dec 1785 in South Carolina; died 21 Nov 1852 in Dooly County, Georgia. He married on 14 Jan 1810 in Pulaski County, Georgia Mary KNIGHT, born 9 Dec 1789 in North Carolina; died 17 Oct 1850 in Dooly County, Georgia.

e. Andrew GARTMAN, born 1790 in South Carolina; died 1810 in South Carolina.

f. Margaret Catherine GARTMAN), born abt 1791 in South Carolina; died 1840 in Lexington County, South Carolina. She married unknown. There are sources that indicate that Margaret Catherine was married to a mulatto slave . Therefore, her children continued with the family name.

g. Bartholomew GARTMAN, born abt 1795 in Orangeburgh, South Carolina; died 31 Mar 1834 in Pike City, Mississippi. He married on 11 Mar 1811 in Barnwell, South Carolina Ellender OQUIN, born 1796; died 31 May 1876 in Pike City, Mississippi, daughter of Daniel OQUIN and Barsheba (HALL) OQuin .

Notes for Bartholomew GARTMAN: Moved to Mississippi about 1800. War of 1812 from Mississippi. Enlisted 25 Sep 1814, discharged 31 Dec 1814.
